Work out the rows before you cut the first plank
This laminate flooring layout calculator solves parallel plank courses in one rectangular room. It works for click-lock vinyl when you enter that product's limits. It searches for a complete stagger sequence that makes the shortest wall-end piece as long as possible, then prefers fewer repeated seams. It also checks the first and last ripped rows.
A 30 mm last strip becomes two 105 mm edge rows
The metric example is a 4800 × 3650 mm room with 1220 × 180 mm planks. A 10 mm gap at every wall leaves 4780 × 3630 mm. Starting at full width gives twenty 180 mm rows and a final 30 mm strip. Balancing replaces one full row and that strip with two 105 mm edge rows: 105 + 19 × 180 + 105 = 3630 mm.
The usable run leaves 1120 mm after three full planks. Splitting that remainder gives 560 mm pieces at both ends of a row. Other rows start with longer pieces, so the joints satisfy the entered 300 mm adjacent offset. The result reports any H-joints that remain, separately from that adjacent-row check.
Which stagger rule should I enter?
Quick-Step's laminate instructions recommend 300 mm between successive-row joints and a last row at least 50 mm wide. Karndean's rigid-core instructions use 200 mm joint spacing for planks and product-specific expansion requirements. The 300 mm minimum end length here is a planning assumption you can change. Your product's instructions decide all three limits.
Questions before installation
Is the joint offset the same as the starter length?
No. Joint offset is the distance between the closest end joints in neighboring rows. A long starter can still put its joints close to those in the next row. The planner checks actual joints throughout the run.
Does it prevent H-joints and staircase patterns?
Only if you ask it to. Longest end pieces, the default, maximises the shortest piece at a wall and reports any joints that repeat two rows apart. Those repeats are the price of that goal: the longer the shortest end has to be, the fewer starters can achieve it, until only two clear your offset — and two starters repeat every second row. Switch the joint pattern to No repeated joints and it lays the rows on a cycle of three starters instead, so no row matches the row two back, at the cost of a shorter shortest end. Neither setting guarantees a random appearance or removes staircase patterns.
Why is the plank count higher than an area estimate?
The count assigns one fresh plank to each installed piece. It does not assume that an offcut has the right length, factory end or long-edge profile for another row. The extra percentage adds spare planks to that conservative count; boxes then round it up again.
Can I rotate the plan?
Use “Swap laying direction” to exchange room length and width and solve again. Compare the end pieces, edge rows and quantity. Light, doorways and your product's installation direction still affect the choice.
What if it cannot find a valid layout?
It keeps your limits and explains the conflict. Check measurements and product rules, try the other direction or choose a different plank size. The tool never quietly lowers your minimums.
Can I use this for several rooms or an L-shaped floor?
No. V1 covers one rectangle without obstacles. Continuous floors through doorways need a combined plan, expansion checks and installation sequencing that this tool does not model.
