How to stagger plank flooring: check the joints, not just the starters
A worked plank layout shows why starter length and joint offset differ, how to check every row, and why a 300 mm rule is not universal.

The starter is the piece you cut. The stagger is the distance between joints in neighboring rows. Those are different measurements, and confusing them is how a row that begins with a substantial piece can still create a bad joint pattern.
Before cutting, write down three separate limits from your flooring instructions: the minimum spacing between adjacent end joints, the minimum piece length at a wall, and the minimum width of the last row. Then lay out enough rows to check the pattern as a whole. A box count cannot do that check for you.
Our plank layout planner draws every installed piece, checks the three entered size limits and provides a row schedule. The following example explains the measurements behind that schedule, including an appearance limitation that a green joint-spacing result does not remove.
Begin with the usable room, after the gap
Take a rectangular room measuring 4800 × 3650 mm, and planks whose installed covering size is 1220 × 180 mm. For this example, allow 10 mm at every wall. Subtract it twice from each room dimension:
- Usable run: 4800 − 20 = 4780 mm.
- Usable width: 3650 − 20 = 3630 mm.
These measurements use the plank’s covering dimensions. A projecting locking tongue is not extra floor coverage. Measure the actual product and confirm how its supplier states the nominal size.
Across the room, twenty full-width rows consume 3600 mm, leaving only 30 mm. If the product needs at least 50 mm at that wall, the full-width start is already wrong before any stagger choice has been made. Rip the first and last rows to 105 mm each. The width now reconciles as:
105 + 19 × 180 + 105 = 3630 mm.
There are still 21 rows. We have shared the spare width and one full row between the two boundaries. We have not created another gap between the courses.
List the joints in one row
Along the run, three full planks occupy 3660 mm. That leaves 1120 mm. A full-plank start therefore produces this sequence:
1220 + 1220 + 1220 + 1120 = 4780 mm.
Its internal joints are 1220, 2440 and 3660 mm from the left expansion line. The wall at the far end is not another plank joint.
Now split the 1120 mm remainder between both ends of a different row:
560 + 1220 + 1220 + 1220 + 560 = 4780 mm.
Its internal joints are 560, 1780, 3000 and 4220 mm. Compare those positions with the first row. The nearest distance is 560 mm; other neighboring distances are 660 mm. This pair easily meets our example minimum adjacent offset of 300 mm, and no end piece is shorter than 560 mm.
The important check was not “is the starter longer than 300 mm?” It was “how close does any internal joint come to a joint in the neighboring row?” You can repeat that check with a tape during the dry lay.
A long starter can give a short stagger
Put a 1120 mm starter beside the full-start row instead. That row ends with a full plank:
1120 + 1220 + 1220 + 1220 = 4780 mm.
Its joints are 1120, 2340 and 3560 mm. Every one is just 100 mm from a joint in the full-start row. All its pieces are long, yet its adjacent joint spacing fails the 300 mm requirement.
The 1120 mm row can sit beside the 560 mm row: their closest joints are 560 mm apart. This is why a valid list of starter lengths is not enough. The order of those starters matters. The planner tests compatibility before choosing the whole sequence, and its closest-joint readout names both rows and both positions.
What the 300 mm rule actually means
Quick-Step’s laminate installation guidance recommends at least 30 cm between joints in successive rows. It also tells you to check the last row and keep it at least 5 cm wide. Those are two different axes of the same floor.
They are not a universal specification for every plank product. Karndean’s rigid-core plank and tile installation guide specifies 200 mm between plank short ends and gives separate expansion-gap, floor-area and long-run requirements. A number copied from a laminate guide may not describe the vinyl product in your boxes.
The planner’s 300 mm minimum wall-end length is an editable planning assumption. It is not a quotation of either joint-spacing rule. Enter your own product’s limits; do not lower them just to make a proposed layout pass.
Passing the adjacent check does not remove H-joints
Alternating two compatible rows gives a complete floor with valid adjacent spacing. It also repeats the same joint lines every other row. Viewed across three rows, those repeated seams create the familiar H pattern.
That repetition is not bad luck. It follows from asking for the longest possible end pieces. The longer the shortest end piece has to be, the fewer starter lengths can deliver it, until only two clear the adjacent-joint rule — and a row sequence built from two starters must repeat every second row. In the worked example, 9 of the 19 row pairs two apart share a joint line. In a 5.0 m room, all 19 do.
So the two goals genuinely conflict, and the planner lets you pick which one wins. Longest end pieces is the default and gives the example above: a 560 mm shortest end with those repeats. No repeated joints treats a repeated line as forbidden and lays the rows on a cycle of three different starters — 410 mm, 710 mm and 1120 mm — so no row can match the row two back. Both layouts still meet the entered 300 mm adjacent offset and 300 mm minimum end piece.
Repeat-free costs two things, and the second one is easy to miss. The obvious cost is end length: the shortest end piece falls from 560 mm to 410 mm. The quieter cost is stock. Three starters make more part-rows than two, so the same floor goes from 94 whole planks to 98 — and at eight planks a box, from 13 boxes to 14. That is not a rounding artefact of the 10% allowance; it is four more planks actually laid. Whether you pay it depends on the room: at 20 × 20 m both patterns lay the same 1887 planks and the choice is free.
So decide the pattern before you order, not after. Switching it on the way home from the merchant can leave you a box short.
Which one you want is a product question, not a mathematical one. If your instructions forbid repeated joints, use the repeat-free setting and accept the shorter end pieces. If they only specify an adjacent-joint distance, the longer end pieces are usually easier to handle and less fragile at the wall.
The tool still does not evaluate staircase appearance, printed wood-grain repeats or the balance of light and dark boards. Inspect the drawing and mix the visual pattern according to the product instructions before committing to the cuts.
Keep the locking ends that the next piece needs
A short piece is useful only if its remaining factory edges fit its location. The cut end of a starter faces the starting wall; its factory short end connects to the next piece. A row’s finishing piece needs the opposite arrangement. A ripped long edge belongs at the boundary, with the required locking edge toward the neighboring course.
The cutting sheet draws each piece on a fresh stock plank and identifies the side to keep. Cut on the discarded side of your mark so the blade’s kerf does not shorten the installed piece. Check the locking direction on your actual product before transferring the drawing to the board.
For that reason, the displayed quantity assigns one fresh plank to every piece. It does not deduct reused offcuts. An installer may save material through careful reuse, but that saving needs a proven destination and the right locking edges. Extra spare stock is added after the fresh-plank count, and the purchase then rounds up to complete boxes.
Carry a checked sequence to the room
Measure the room at several points. A rectangular plan cannot account for a bowed wall, a doorway recess or a fixed island. Confirm the gap, mark the first row’s rip, then dry-lay the first few courses in the printed order. Measure the closest joints and the finishing pieces before cutting the remaining stock.
Use the row numbers to keep the cutting schedule aligned with the drawing. Piece 3.2 means the second piece in row 3, counting from the same starting wall. Dimensions are rounded for the tape; the last fit should always be checked on site. The useful plan is the one whose measurements, locking edges and sequence you can reproduce on the floor.
